Static IP vs Dynamic IP: Which Does Your Business Actually Need?

Most home connections use a dynamic IP without anyone noticing or needing to care. But for certain business setups, a static IP isn't a nice-to-have — it's a requirement.

The plain difference

A dynamic IP changes periodically, assigned automatically by your provider. A static IP stays fixed permanently, giving your connection a consistent, predictable address on the internet.

When you actually need a static IP

  • Hosting your own server, website, or mail server on-site
  • Remote CCTV/DVR access that needs to be reachable from outside your network
  • Site-to-site VPN connections between office branches
  • Remote desktop access into office systems from outside
  • Software that whitelists specific IPs for security (banking portals, some SaaS tools)

When a dynamic IP is genuinely fine

If your business just needs staff to browse, use cloud tools like Google Workspace, and make calls, a dynamic IP on a solid connection works perfectly well — you don't need to pay extra for something you won't use.

The quick way to decide

Ask one question: does anything need to reach into your network from outside, reliably, at a fixed address? If yes, get a static IP. If everything is outbound-only (browsing, cloud apps, calls), you're fine without one.

What it costs to get this wrong

Paying for a static IP you never use is a small, ongoing waste. But the reverse mistake is usually worse: running remote CCTV, a VPN, or hosted services on a dynamic IP means your setup can silently break every time your IP address changes, often with no warning until someone notices the camera feed or VPN has stopped connecting. If any part of your business depends on being reachable from outside at a fixed address, the small extra cost of a static IP is cheap insurance against that kind of outage.
